Arcade Feed: Invincible Tiger the Legend of Han Tao

This week in Xbox Live Arcade –

If a beat em’ up action kung fu game is your thing, then Invincible Tiger is for you.  Especially if you have a soft spot for retro music and Bruce Lee Films.  You star as Han Tao, a drunken master of sorts.  His dereliction to duty has you on a quest to return a stolen ancient artifact with mystical powers.

First of all, let me just say I was surprised to see an option i’ve never seen in a video game in recent memory.  A setting to change the video to 3D!  I’ve ordered a pair of 3D glasses from the official website and i’ll follow up when I get them.  If I don’t have a seizure that is.

There are six challenging levels that are split into chapters.  The chapters progress as you defeat a certain amount of enemies.  You may have a few chapters on one stage of the level and then it will advance you further and you’ll fight on another stage.  The chapters don’t seem to have much meaning other than you’ll encounter a new wave of enemies.  The story unfolds in a comic type cinematic between stages where the narrator explains the state of affairs, otherwise you are punching and kicking your way to victory.

When I say challenging I meant to say very challenging.  You do have an option to heal but remembering to do it is the part that gets me.  I played for about 2 hours and only made it to the end of level 2.  The controls are basic jump, kick, punch and action but with added combos which are now a staple of fighting games.  The right stick will also allow you to dodge attacks.   If you’re going to have fun with this game you’ll have to learn the controls.  No button mashing allowed, there’s some skill involved here folks.

I think the online Co-op will definietly help this game.  It adds some more value to a play through.  This seems to be a short game for 1200 points, 800 would have been a little closer.  There’s a challenge mode and a time trial mode but the gameplay is the same with different objectives.  I’d say give the demo a shot and see if this is your thing.  I don’t think it’ll be for everybody but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played so far.
